Food for a cause

Olathe Northwest teacher Loretta Shull and her Culinary II/Gourmet cooking class have been very busy lately preparing food for the ONW Raven Pride Band’s annual Blues and BBQ event. This is sure to be a spectacular evening full of great
jazz performed by the ONW jazz bands, excellent barbecue catered in by The Rub off K-7 highway and Ridgeview, a delicious dessert created by the Culinary II/Gourmet cooking class, and silent and live auctions giving away lots of
awesome items and baskets. This evening has always managed to be one of the most successful events put on at ONW. Thousands of dollars are raised for the ONW band program, and most people leave with some great items. The food has
always been excellent as well.

Mrs. Shull and her Culinary II class have been preparing over 500 triple berry cookie trifles as dessert for Blues and BBQ. These delectable desserts are made of layers of crushed cookies, vanilla cream, cheesecake and berry sauce all topped with fresh fruit and whipped cream. The Culinary II class has been preparing food for Blues and BBQ for about four years now. The students receive a grade on this assignment, so the food is always very good. They began buying their materials in bulk weeks ago because they were on sale. Culinary II is also making food for a faculty luncheon. They’re making spaghetti and meatballs, salad, garlic toast and banana split pies.

The class also collaborates with the advanced ceramics class in a fundraiser for Safe Home, a shelter for domestic violence that will be held during parent-teacher conferences. The ceramics class creates bowls and the culinary class makes gourmet mixes to put in the bowls. In the past, this fundraiser has made over $800. The classes hope more people will donate to their cause this year.

“I love working with the students, they are very
motivated,” Schull said.
