ONW has implemented a new recycling initiative program this semester, thanks largely in part to senior Hannah Richardson. Richardson is the Student Council Executive Board Chair and she helped set up this recycling program with assistance from the city of Olathe.

“My step-dad works for the city of Olathe, and he helped me come up with ideas to create a recycling program here at ONW. I noticed that there was no system of recycling, and I wanted to change that,” Richardson said.

Richardson and Student Council sponsors spoke with officials from the recycling department at the city of Olathe and were able to figure out a program that would vastly boost recycling. Richardson created several power points about the details and benefits of a recycling program at ONW and displayed these power points to Ms. Hilliard. After some time, this program was finally implemented.

“The city supplied us with eight large bins that we have put in the math, science, English and social studies pods as well as the main office. Each week we empty the bins into the large recycling dumpster that is located at the back side of the school. The income generated from our recycled material will help fund the city’s other community programs,” Richardson said.

NHS, Student Council, Rink Crew and Service Club are the four main clubs that are leading the way for this program. Each one of these clubs takes responsibility for emptying the recycling bins once a week.

So far, this program has been a great success because students across the school have taken the initiative to help empty the bins every week. With all this success, it seems likely that recycling will continue to grow here at ONW.

“My hope is that recycling can grow and one day we can even have bins in the hallways,” Richardson said.

Richardson has played an instrumental role in getting recycling going at ONW,  but it will be the responsibility of the juniors and underclassmen to help further this program.
