Wang wins another award

Senior Cassie Wang has excelled at golf since the moment she first took the practice field for Olathe Northwest. This year she finished second at the State tournament. She has since  began to collect many awards. She has won the Kenneth Smith award and now with the Midwest PGA Junior Student Athlete of the Year,  an award that Wang was amazed to received.

“I was completely speechless, it was really shocking to me actually, and it’s a great honor,” Wang said.

The Midwest PGA Student Athlete of the Year recognizes talent in, golf, academics and leadership. Athletes from both high school and the national level are considered for the award. Only one athlete for either boys or girls is chosen.

At the ceremony Wang got to meet a PGA Tour and Kansas City golf legend, Tom Watson. Watson was there to be inducted into the Midwest PGA Tour hall of Fame.

“It was amazing, and I couldn’t believe he was going to be there. I was shocked he actually talked about me in his [induction] speech because I wasn’t even sure if he knew who I was,” Wang said.

The award for Wang is just the tip of the iceberg. This major award will surely add attention to her performances in the classroom and on the course. Though the attention is something Wang expects.

“The award received a lot of attention along with the Kenneth Smith award, So a lot of golf coaches at colleges I’m looking at will probably notice that,” Wang said.

“Continue to work hard because golf has taught me how to work hard,” Wang said.

As Wang prepares for her senior season next fall this award will propel her to bigger and better things.  Though she still believes that the game of golf has taught her how to help out in the community and work hard.
