Coming off their first taste of defeat, the lady Ravens responded in a commanding fashion by winning the Newton Invitational Tournament.
The ladies started of the tournament with a Rose Hill team that had a lackluster record at 4-6. Rose Hill stayed within striking distance after the first only trailing 16-13 but ultimately the Ravens’ size and talent pulled away. The Ravens won 64-44 with junior Jaylah Jackson leading all scorers with 18 followed by junior Kelsey Brooks who had 15.
In the next round of the tournament, the Ravens played 7-4 Andover Central. Andover once again kept close with the Lady Ravens, as the Ravens only lead by one at half. The second half was a completely different story though, with the lady Ravens making the game look like it was not a competition, winning 63-51. Once again Jackson lead all scorers with 20 points followed by Brooks who had 17.
In the championship match, the ladies played the host team Newton. This game turned into a dog fight, going back and forth with the game tied at 12 at the end of the first. After some streaky shooting, the Ravens went up 30-23 at the halftime on the host. After only scoring four points in the third quarter, the game became more of a competition with the Ravens leading by one at the end of the third, 34-33. After a very competitive fourth quarter, the Ravens were up 44-42 with only 25.5 seconds left in the game. This game was competitive but ultimately the Lady Ravens won 46-42, beating the host team Newton on their home court, and taking home the title of Newton Tournament Champs. After a lower scoring game than the first two games, Brooks was the leading scorer with 12 followed closely by Jackson with 11 points.
The ladies return to action today at 7:00 P.M. at home against Schlagle.
