The spring sports season has taken off to a successful start for many athletes at our school. The track and field team has been working vigorously to make it to the top at their recent competitions. Already the team has competed at the Johnson County meet, Baldwin and Olathe Northwest. At the Baldwin meet, the girls placed third and the boys placed fourth; competing against many 4A schools. The Olathe Northwest meet held many strong and fast teams, making it a real fight to defeat rivals Olathe East and Olathe North. Last year, Olathe East won state with both boys and girls.
Practices start at 3:20 p.m. everyday and generally run until around 5:00. During practices the team breaks into their special groups, which focus on the athletes’ main events and strengths.
“One interesting event that only one of our athletes competes in is called the steeple chase,” senior Leslie Lindsey said.
Senior Margo Sinclair runs 3,000 meters for this race. Obstacles include hurdles and water that you land in after the hurdles. This event is extremely difficult for most people, making it less popular of an event to perform in.
The team has many different coaches so that their special focus gets the individual attention that they need. Coach Ewers is the head coach for Olathe Northwest and has been for years. Other coaches include Coach Anderson, Coach Franklin, Coach Dain, Coach Zimmerman, Coach Barnes, Coach Sales, Coach Rodden and Coach Wrecke. Different groups include springs, jumps, distance, shot, throws, and javelin.
The team has a very strong boys team including seniors Avery Parker, Bruce Dougherty and Lucas Demott. Unfortunately, one very strong performer, Alex Anthony, became injured very early in the season. For the girls the strong runners include seniors Leslie Lindsey, Ashlyn Landherr, Margo Sinclair and Hannah Kovarik. Sophomores Rachel Gardner and Saleena Bouvilom also are main supporters.
Three major meets remain: KU relays, Sunflower league and State. State lies on May 26 and 27. Be sure to come out and support your school. We have a lot to be proud of this year.
