About this New Web Site

Olathe Northwest is pleased to have launched this new website on August 21, 2011!

The ONW website is our main vehicle for communication.  As such, it will continue to feature current news and important announcements for students and parents.  We also have some exciting new developments:

What’s New?

  • This new site is actually a network of sites in the making.  We will now have the capability to share important stories between websites in this network.  For example: “Student X Chosen as All-conference Standout” could be posted originally on the football site, but then also broadcasted to the athletics site and the main ONW site.  Two more benefits of having the sites networked are that we will be able to implement consistent design across all the sites, and will also be better able to keep the sites updated.
  • We are currently starting a new Convergence Journalism course of study – coming from a merger of our traditional print journalism program with e-Communication’s Broadcasting strand.  Students in Convergence Journalism will not only be assigned to write stories and conduct interviews for their “beats”, but also shoot and edit photos and video, update scores and events on Twitter, and then post all of this convergence of media to tell their stories on our websites.  This information will be available to students, parents and the public in a much more timely fashion than ever before.  There will continue to be ocassional student newspaper publications and ONW NOW broadcasts, but their purpose will change to focus more on in-depth feature stories.  e-Communication web design students will also be getting more into the action this year than before.

All this adds up to more timely information available on our websites – much of it student generated.

The Progress

  • Where are we now?  This new ONW site launched on 8/21.  The new Athletics site (onwravens.net/athletics)  is now also active, as of 8/26.  There are still gaps in that site, but those will be filling over the next few days.  The next two sites to come online will be a new ONW Football site and the website for our new Convergence Journalists.  Those sites are coming early in September.  The goal is that before the end of the school year, all current team and activities websites that want to become a part of this new site network will be in place.  We will, of course, continue to link to all of our teams’ and activities’ websites – whether they become part of the network or remain independent.

Thank you for your patience with our project.  Please feel free to make suggestions on this work in progress!
