This year, Olathe Northwest has achieved the highest ACT average in the school’s 9-year history, raising the record from last year, which was an average of 23.4 out of 36 to a new record of 23.8. The ACT, the most popular college entrance exam given in the nation, is an exam most juniors and seniors here at Olathe Northwest take in order to gain entry to one of the thousands of colleges here in the United States. Compared to the rest of the state, this score is slightly above the state average of 22.0.
“I think that is a big area for celebration for the whole building right now,” said English teacher and testing expert Mrs. Hedges. Getting this high of a score in the school’s history is quite a feat.
“When we ask more of our students, then they tend to meet our expectations.” Considering that more students at ONW are studying harder, it could only be natural that students are getting higher and higher scores more frequently. But this could also be attributed to students taking harder and harder classes.
“If you just take classes because they are easy, then your ACT scores aren’t going to be that great,” Hedges said. With review sessions being offered through the district, as well as tutoring companies offering sessions year round, it seems as though there is no possible way for students to fail their ACT.
Compared to the other three Olathe schools in the district, Olathe Northwest is both above and below their standards, as Olathe North and South have 22.4 and 22.9 respectively, while Northwest has yet to beat Olathe East with a 24.7 average score. With time, Olathe Northwest will rise hopefully to the challenge and earn the highest honor of having the highest average ACT score in the district.
