FIRST Robotics advances to World Competition

The FIRST Robotics team had great success at the Smokey Mountain FIRST Robotics Regional in Knoxville, TN this past week. If you want the short story read the bolded items below.

Brandon Hernandez won the Regional Woody Flowers Award.  Teams nominate a coach or mentor for this award by submitting an essay at the regional competition.  From those submissions one coach/mentor is selected as a Woody Flowers finalist and they compete against all other finalist from the over 60 regionals around the world at the World Championships in St. Louis on April 27-30. Congratulate Mr. Hernandez and wish him luck at St. Louis.

Jordan Love won the Regional Dean’s List Award.  Once again teams nominate a student for this award by submitting an essay at the regional competition, as part of the submission Jordan also conducted a 10 minute interview with a panel of judges.  From those submissions and interviews two students are selected as a Deans List finalist and they compete against all other finalist from the over 60 regionals around the world at the World Championships in St. Louis on April 27-30.  If Jordan is selected as one of the 10 Dean’s list award winners at Champs is come with a nice amount of prizes for her and open a vast amount of scholarship dollars.

The team once again won the Chairman’s Award (For the 5th year in a row) This is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST.  This award qualifies the team for the World Championship in St Louis where we will compete will all other Regional Chairman’s Award winners for the World Championship Chairman’s Award.  As a side note out the over 3000 FRC Teams around the world ONW Team 1710 is in the top 16 for most Chairman’s Award wins, tied with 8 other team at 6. Wish the team luck at Champs.

The robot competed very well during the 11 qualifying matches we played.  We were the 3rd robot chosen during in the finals selection. (I will say this robot this year played the most consistent matches I have ever seen for one of our bots and all were very good) However during the finals our alliance was plagued with connection issues to the field at one point all 3 robots on our alliance were sitting dead on the field.  With that we were beat out on the first round.
