Help Us Fix Broom Bot!

We are FIRST Robotics Team 1710, Ravonics Revolution.  FIRST is an acronym for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” Our team is composed of 48 students, grades 9-12, 4 coaches and 20 mentors. We are heavily involved in our school and our community and a primary goal of our team is to inspire others, particularly young people, to get excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).  We achieve this, in part, by offering summer camps for kids to build and program Lego Robots, holding STEM Mentoring Days for middle school girls, mentoring younger FLL and FTC teams, and hosting other opportunities for kids to broaden their understanding of STEM areas and careers. That is why we were really excited when presented with an opportunity to design and build a robot that would be on exhibition to our entire community every Friday night at our home basketball games!

During the 2010-2011 school year, Team 1710 was approached by the Athletic Director at our school with a request that we make a robot that could sweep the floors during half-time at the basketball games.  We welcomed the challenge and quickly set about creating “Broom Bot.”  Broom Bot was built solely by our team members and became a favorite part of the night for many fans, young and old. Broom Bot faithfully attended basketball games on Friday evenings for several years, sweeping the floors during breaks and at half-time. In 2014, the Team decided to add a pneumatic t-shirt cannon to Broom Bot and shoot  t-shirts to the crowd during time outs and half-time! This addition to the bot made the crowds go wild!

During the 2015-16 school year, Broom Bot experienced some significant mechanical failure with the pneumatics, and was not working during basketball season. Shortly after our 6 week build season began, Broom Bot was cannibalized for a few of its parts, particularly the RoboRio (brain for the robot) and major parts of the drive train.  Broom Bot is no longer a working robot. We are hoping to revitalize Broom Bot this year and once again see the eyes of children light up when Broom Bot sweeps the floor and shoots t-shirts across the gym!

In order to bring Broom Bot back to life, we are in need of a number of key components, including new pneumatics, motors, wheels, gearboxes, and electronics, as well as a new RoboRio if we can raise the funds.  Can you help us?: I Want to Help Broom Bot!
