Lady Ravens Fall in First Round of State Playoffs

The 14-3-1 Olathe Northwest girl’s soccer team traveled to play Blue Valley North on Tuesday for the first round of the 6A Kansas State Tournament. Coming off their Regional Championship win against Shawnee Mission Northwest, the Lady Ravens hoped to surprise the second ranked team in Northeast Kansas.

Olathe Northwest got the scoring started in the first half after Kathleen Payne found the back of the net on a nice ball from Isabelle Pruss. Great defense continued to be a key factor as the Ravens were able to hold Blue Valley North (15-3) scoreless in the first half.

The equalizer came for Blue Valley North just minutes into the second half, bringing ONW’s momentum to a halt. According to Olathe Northwest coach Chris Graham, the Ravens were slow to take advantage of counter opportunities throughout the second half. Northwest failed to capitalize on their chances as Blue Valley North found their first lead of the night on a goal with 8 minutes remaining. Last ditch efforts fell short, thus ending the season for the Ravens.

Northwest finishes with an impressive record of 14-4-1 on the year. Although the team will lose eight seniors, many underclassmen who received valuable time on field will return next year to fill the voids left by seniors.
