Road Construction Updates: Eastbound Lanes to Open Thursday

November 29:

Weather dependent, there will be a switch in traffic control on Thursday, December 1, after 8:30 AM.  Eastbound traffic will utilize the newly constructed lanes on the south side of the median on College Blvd. from Lone Elm Rd. to Woodland Rd.  Please keep in mind, due to continued median work, there may be periodic lane reductions.  A minimum of one lane of traffic in each direction will be open at all times.  Please follow posted traffic control and proceed with caution through the construction zone.

November 17:

Beginning Friday, November 18, after 8:30 a.m., the traffic pattern at the Woodland Rd./College Blvd. intersection will be modified to accommodate removal and reconstruction of the existing median on College Blvd. west of Woodland Rd.

Changes you can expect:

  • The existing eastbound left turn lane on College Blvd. will close. Traffic will be allowed to turn left from College Blvd. to Woodland Rd. from the existing left eastbound lane on College Blvd.  Increased congestion is anticipated during peak hours.
  • Westbound traffic approaching the intersection will be reduced to one through lane to allow crews access to the median for construction.

These lane modifications will be in place for the next two to three weeks (weather permitting).  Through traffic will follow the existing traffic control that is currently in place.  Please follow posted traffic control and proceed with caution through the construction zone.

November 10:
Please read below for an update on the College Boulevard construction…

Beginning Monday, November 14, after 8:30 a.m., the traffic pattern at the Lone Elm Rd./College Blvd. intersection will be modified to accommodate removal and reconstruction of the existing median on College Blvd. in front of ONWHS.

Changes you can expect:

  • The existing westbound left turn lane on College Blvd. will close. Traffic will be allowed to turn left from College Blvd. to Lone Elm Rd. from the existing left westbound lane on College Blvd.  Increased congestion is anticipated during peak hours.
  • Eastbound traffic approaching the intersection will be reduced to one through lane to allow crews access to the median for construction.

These lane modifications will be in place for the next two to three weeks (weather permitting).  Through traffic will follow the existing traffic control that is currently in place.  Please follow posted traffic control and proceed with caution through the construction zone.

Unfortunately due to weather concerns today, the work listed below will be rescheduled to Thursday, October 27 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

On Wednesday, October 26, THURSDAY 10/27 -from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., traffic signal work will be conducted at the intersection of College Blvd. and Woodland Rd.  College Blvd. and Woodland Rd. will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction while this work is completed.  Flaggers will be on site directing traffic during this time.  Due to anticipated congestion, please allow extra time to travel through this corridor or consider an alternate route.

Received from the city the afternoon of Tuesday, 10/11:

“Due to congestion from construction in front of ONWHS, the speed limit on College Blvd, between Lone Elm and Woodland, will be been reduced from 40 mph to 30 mph. The school zone speed limit of 25 mph will remain.  This decrease in speed will be in place starting Wednesday, October 12 and remain through the end of construction for the safety of the students and drivers.  Police will be monitoring the area and enforcing the new speed limit.

Safety remains the number one priority of the City, especially when there is construction near schools.  We would like to thank you for your corporation and patience with this project.”

From Principal Chris Zuck, on October 7:

new-nw-traffic-mapStudents: Please review the attached image with arrows indicating what the traffic pattern will look like starting Monday.

Also noteworthy is that we are covering the “No Left Turn” signs in the southwest parking lot that have previously precluded students from turning towards the Lone Elm exit.  We will be observing to make sure allowing left turns in these location is safe/correct and then removing the signs completely.

Students probably would also like to know that our Lone Elm entrance/exit will no longer be closed during the school day.  So as they need to leave for appointments or return, they can use this entrance if they are coming from the west or leaving to the east.  They will just need to go through the Lone Elm/College Blvd stoplight.

New update from the city, on October 6:

Beginning Monday, October 10, school traffic will not be permitted to make a left turn in or out of the west driveway at ONWHS on College Blvd. This will be a permanent change in the traffic pattern for school traffic entering and exiting ONWHS. Traffic entering the school from College Blvd. will use a newly constructed left turn lane at the high school’s east driveway while thru traffic on College Blvd. will use a designated thru lane. This permanent change will assist in better traffic flow and safety on College Blvd.

There will also be lane drops on College Blvd. between Ridgeview and Renner, Wednesday, October 12 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for asphalt repairs.

The following is an update from the city on October 4 regarding construction on College Boulevard:

We want to keep you up to date on a traffic pattern change that will take place starting Monday, October 10 (weather permitting) near Olathe Northwest High School.  Message boards will be out beginning today to caution drivers about the upcoming change.

The contractor will move the existing switch over in traffic from two lanes to four lanes from the western school entrance/Christ Community Church of Nazarene entrance further to the east near the school’s eastern boundary by the pond on the south side of the roadway.  This will allow for an eastbound left turn lane into the eastern school entrance.

There will still be intermittent lane closures along College Blvd that will reduce traffic from two-lanes in each direction to one-lane in each direction throughout the remainder of the project.  We hope to limit this as much as possible to between peak hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:00p.m.)

Below is an updated timeline for College Blvd., as of 9/23/16:

As you are aware, the College Blvd construction is well under way. Please note the updated information listed below, especially the highlighted portions. We are still looking at what adjustments, if any, will be necessary once components of the construction are complete.

  • The Lone Elm NB right turn lane at College Blvd. is under construction and should be open to traffic by the first week in October.
  • Last week, the contractor placed first layer of asphalt and curb along the 2 southern lanes from Lone Elm to just east of the eastern school entrance. They are currently placing base rock from this terminus to near the eastern boundary of the school property with the first lift of pavement to be completed by end of the week pending weather.
  • In mid-October, the contractor will move the existing switch over in traffic from 2 lanes to 4 lanes from the western school entrance/Christ Community Church of Nazarene entrance further to the east near the school’s eastern boundary by the pond on south side of roadway. This will allow for an eastbound left turn lane into the eastern school entrance. There will still be intermittent lane closures along College Blvd that will reduce traffic from 2-lanes in each direction to 1-lane in each direction throughout the project. We hope to limit this as much as possible to between peak hours (8:30am to 4:00pm).
  • Mill and Overlay work between K-7 and Lone Elm will begin next week resulting in intermittent lane closures along College between Lone Elm and K-7. These lane closures will only occur between 8:30am and 4:00pm.
  • Substantial completion should be by the end of the year.
  • In Spring 2017, the entire 2” of asphalt surface will be laid from Lone Elm to College.
