Undermanned Ravens Snag Regional Title on Road to State

The Olathe Northwest Girl’s soccer team hosted the Cougars of Shawnee Mission Northwest in a battle for a berth in the state championship tournament. Shawnee Mission Northwest handed Olathe Northwest their only Sunflower League loss of the year, edging the Ravens 1-0.

Olathe Northwest got off to a fast start after a ball into a congested SMNW box met the foot of Savanah Moxley, leading to an early 1-0 lead for the Ravens. Physicality became a big part of the game before the Cougars found their equalizer just after Northwest took the lead.

With the game tied 1-1, a seemingly equal game looked as though momentum would be taken by Shawnee Mission Northwest after Jamie Barmann collided with a Shawnee Mission defender, knocking her to the ground. The official issued a red card to Barmann, forcing Olathe Northwest to play a (wo)man down for the rest of the game. Playing with ten players could not stop Taylor Wiens from finding Mia Haake in the box with a few minutes left in the first half, giving Olathe Northwest the lead, for good.

The second half went back and forth, with neither team getting many good chances. The Lady Ravens stormed the field as they had captured the regional title on their home turf. Olathe Northwest awaits their first round matchup in the state tournament on Tuesday, May 22nd.
