You Go Girl

It is no surprise that the majority of people interested in the field of engineering are men. In 2008, Team 1710 made an effort to get girls excited in engineering by starting You Go Girl.

Last year, we launched a massive Facebook campaign with over 1,500 people where we promoted girls to expand their horizons and take a fresh look at engineering by attending a FIRST Regional in their area.

We also sent an invitation to several Brownie, Girl Scout and Daisy troops inviting them to take a personal tour of the Kansas City FIRST Regional.

In the past, we have mailed out postcards headlined “You Go Girl!” to all of the 8th grade girls within the Olathe School District, encouraging them to consider all of the possibilities in the science and technology field through Olathe Northwest’s 21st Century Programs. Girls participating in our youth programs are encouraged to have active roles and become leaders.

We further encourage girls at our local regional though the use of motivational posters, t-shirts and buttons. Last year at the KC Regional, we put up posters all around the regional dome and handed out You Go Girl buttons. Members of our team also advertised You Go Girl by wearing t-shirts and pink safety glasses.

You Go Girl is continually expanding and growing with the team. Each year we extend our reach father and farther into the community, drawing in larger numbers as we continue to share our passion and enthusiasm for FIRST and STEM.
