About Raven Bands

The Olathe Northwest Raven Pride Bands have earned the respect of their peers throughout the state and region with exceptional performances and numerous division I or superior ratings. In its short history as Olathe’s newest high school, Northwest has much to celebrate and even more to look forward to.
In 2005, both the Raven Winds and Raven Jazz I were named winning bands at the National Adjudicators Invitational Band Festival in Washington, D.C. The Raven Pride Marching Band represented Olathe in the 2006 Nations Parade-The National Veterans Day Parade, in New York. In 2008, the Marching Band again represented the state of Kansas at the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl Celebration, in San Diego. The Marching Band was a part of the half- time show for the game, held at Qualcomm Stadium. The band had an unforgettable performance on the flight deck of the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier, docked in San Diego Harbor. And the Raven Pride Marching Band captured four of the six trophies awarded for the nationally televised Pacific Life Big Balloon Parade, held on Harbor Drive in San Diego. In 2012, the Raven Pride band program enjoyed a trip to Orlando, Florida where they earned numerous awards at Walt Disney Worlds festivals of music. The band has been selected to represent the State of Kansas in the 95th Annual National Veteran’s Day Parade, New York City this November (2014).
The Jazz program consists of two performing jazz ensembles and one small combo. Raven Jazz II, a non-audition group, earns outstanding ratings at festivals and performs 4-5 times each year. In their first 10 years of existence, Raven Jazz I has the distinction of earning eighteen consecutive division I or superior ratings at Midwestern jazz festivals. They were named winning band at the 2006 Kansas City Jazz Festival, and were just last year named the runner up and one of only two bands invited to perform at finals in the Basically Basie Competition hosted by the Kansas City Jazz Summit.
Last year (2013-14), the program celebrated its most successful year in school history. The band participated in four marching competitions and two parades where the students earned unanimous division I (superior) ratings for both parade and field marching and brought home many trophies and caption awards, among them the 2013 Neewollah Best Drum Major caption. The jazz programs enjoyed superior ratings at each of their five festival performances. The concert program brought home two 1st place trophies in two classes from the National Festivals of Music Competition – St. Louis, Missouri. The band program also captured the celebrated “Esprit de Corps” award which celebrates the character, positive attitude, and integrity of its membership. Student enrollment is the highest in the county and among the highest in the Midwest! The future is bright for the Northwest program as they look forward to another record breaking and memorable year.
The band is under the direction of Robert Davis with assistance from Joshua Maddux, Chris Carter (Percussion), and Shannon Summers (Dance Team / Color Guard).
