Sci-fi concert a success

The Olathe Northwest choir put on quite the unique show this past weekend along with many other students in our area. Choir students from UMKC, Olathe North, Blue Valley and of course our very own Olathe Northwest joined together to form one united ensemble and sing together. The theme of the concert was Sci-Fi. Music was sung from the classic film, “Star Trek.”

The choir has been working vigorously to perfect their songs in time for their big night. Students received their music right after second semester begun, and the rehearsals started in full swing. The dress rehearsal lasted four hours for final cleaning and improving their songs that they would be singing. The concert took place at the Kaufman Center in downtown Kansas City in Heizberg Hall. The concert was scheduled the same evening as our school’s Sweetheart Dance. Choir students were unable to participate in both, but the concert was worth it.

“There were 16 songs that included fog and lasers to complete the show,” Senior Alexis Shires said.

A special appearance was made during the concert. George Takei, Sulu, from the original “Star Trek” did the monologue during two of the pieces that came from “Star Trek.” Students were able to shake his hand and receive autographs.

Olathe Northwest had yet another outstanding performance and experience this past weekend. The talented and hard working students made this happen, and only bigger things are expected in the future for them.
