Lady Raven’s regional dreams dashed

After losing 1-0 to the Shawnee Mission West Vikings in the Sunflower League Championship, the Lady Ravens soccer team looked ahead to their matchup with Blue Valley North in the opening game of the regional tournament.

The match was absolutely grueling. Early in the first half, the Ravens Malia Shinkle snuck a ball into the goal off the ricochet from the Blue Valley North goalkeeper and Kathleen Payne. Unfortunately for the Ravens, the Mustangs battled back for a goal of their own to tie the game at 1 prior to the end of regulation. The rest of the game would be a grueling back and forth battle. At the end of 3 overtime periods, the score was still locked at 1. During the 4th and final overtime, a Blue Valley North player beat the Northwest defenders to a cross into the box and kicked a ball off the post and deflected near the line. Despite a supreme effort from Kaylie Kapplemann, the referees ruled the ball across the line, affirming the 2-1 lead for the Blue Valley North Mustangs.

Although it wasn’t the finish they predicted, the Lady Ravens had a good season. Thank you to all of the seniors who have had such an impact upon their program and their school.
