On Wednesday, Olathe Northwest held its annual Senior Signing Assembly. The ceremony honored all senior students who received scholarships to colleges, most likely those which they will be attending next year.
Since the beginning of the school’s establishment eight years ago, ONW has taken part in this tradition. Although in years past many students claimed multiple scholarships, this year marked a record number of recipients.
178 seniors were honored, the highest total ever recorded at Northwest. As of now, the total is $5.9 million for accepted dollars from the 63 colleges and universities represented in the assembly.
“I am very proud of the Class of 2012 for all their accomplishments this year in working with colleges for scholarship dollars,” senior counselor Genea Bruner said.
In addition to this large amount of success, ONW has two Air Force Academy Appointments and a record number of athletes going to DI schools with full-ride athletic scholarships.
“I think it is really cool that we set a bunch of new records. It really shows how talented our class is. Hopefully each year will keep getting better than the last,” future Xavier student Mackenna Rife, who accepted a swimming scholarship, said.
The scholarships range from academic to sport related, with money amounts ranging from hundred to thousands.
“I cannot believe there is all that money out there that came to us, and we are just one school out of tons more. I think we should all be very honored and not take these opportunities for granted,” Bruce Dougherty, who will be attending the University of Missouri, said.
Congratulations to all seniors, especially those who signed on Wednesday.
